Famciclovir, a prescription antiviral medication, is a deoxynucleoside analog DNA polymerase inhibitor that is used to control feline herpesvirus (FHV-1). Famciclovir itself is not active in either humans or cats; it is metabolized to an active form, penciclovir. The medication works by converting into penciclovir through a two-step process in the blood and in the liver. Penciclovir then inhibits herpes virus DNA synthesis. Full effects can take a few weeks to be noticeable, but side effects can occur immediately. Gradual improvements are usually appreciable after a few days.
Side effects:
Common side effects of famciclovir include decreased appetite, vomiting, diarrhea, and increased drinking (which may lead to increased urination). Any side effects should be reported to your veterinarian.
Contradictions:
Famciclovir should NOT be used in patients with known hypersensitivity to it or to penciclovir (Denavir®). Caution must be taken when famciclovir is used in patients with a history of kidney disease and in pregnant or nursing animals.
Ingredients:
In addition to famciclovir, each tablet contains the following non-medicinal ingredients:
hypromellose, poloxamer, polyethylene glycol, stearic acid, and titanium dioxide
